Despite her young age, Lil Mama is as sharp as she is talented. She makes pop-tinged, clean rap songs with a moral message but from a youthful perspective having made her name rapping on critically acclaimed mix-tapes passed around the hip hop community. On VYP - Voice of The Young People she collaborates with some of her fellow rising stars (such as Chris Brown on her debut single) proving she can do battle with the best of them. A few weeks ago we introduced you to new indie stars Glasvegas and their major label debut Geraldine. Well if you can't wait for their next single and the release of their debut album, have a listen to Geraldine: The B Sides now on We7. It contains two tracks: Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime (a cover of The Korgis classic) and The Prettiest Girl on Saltcoats Beach. Both reveal a gentler side to the band that is not immediately apparent in the band's hard-nosed 50s biker-rock stylings. Watch out for the next single, "Daddy's Gone", coming soon on We7...

In the West, we have many preconceptions about the Middle East but we're pretty sure that avant-garde electronica won't be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Iran. A few listens to Persian Electronic Music Yesterday and Today will soon change that. Released on the connoisseur's music label Sub Rosa (famed for bringing to life archived music that is ignored by the mainstream), this collection brings together pieces recorded over forty years from two Iranian pioneers of the genre: Alireza Mashayehki (b. 1940) and Ata Ebtekar AKA Sote (b. 1972). Both composers deconstruct traditional Iranian sounds and introduce electronic textures and post-modern stylings (such as Musique Concrète and Minimalism) to create a whole new sound that captivates the listener, taking them on an adventure in sound. Persian Electronic Music... is not an easy listen by any means, but stay with it and it will become an aural delight, revealing more with each play. It's a must-listen for all those interested in seeking an alternative to Western pop-fare and for those who want to dig a little deeper into the world of electronica.
Central Reservation was the second full album released by Folk singer Beth Orton. In comparison to its predecessor, Trailer Park (and unlike her collaborations with
electro rockers The Chemical Brothers) Central Reservation
was a more organic creation, an introspective affair that relied less on electronics and more on melodic acoustic sounds. At times Orton reminds you
of Pentangle singer Jacqui McShee, such is the delicacy and wistful tone contained within her voice. Taking in a variety of styles, it
featured contributions from Terry Callier and production credits from Ben Watt (of Everything But The Girl).
