THE TING TINGS: NOWHERESVILLE RADIO

To celebrate the return of the Ting Tings, the Salford pair have taken over the WE7.com homepage and curated an exclusive WE7 radio station which showcases the music that inspired the new album, “Sounds From Nowheresville”.

Double platinum selling British electro-pop duo The Ting Tings are back with their long-awaited new album, out on Monday.

On Nowheresville radio bandmates Katie White and Jules De Martino give a track-by-track commentary explaining many of their choices, which range from Talking Heads to T.L.C. (“You can’t go wrong with a bit of 1990s r’n’b”) via 1960s girl groups and lesser-known artists like Tune-Yards.

The Beastie Boys track “Hey Ladies” inspired many of the new tracks on the album, including the new single “Hang It Up”. There’s definitely a few surprises on Nowheresville radio, but we’ll let you discover them.

Following up on their debut album, “We Started Nothing”, which sold over two million copies, was always going to be tough. After two years of relentless touring, the pair spent an abortive stint in Berlin before decamping to Southern Spain where they rediscovered their love for making their particular strain of hardcore pop. Re-energised and re-inspired, they’re back. We’ve missed them.

On Monday 4 songs from the album will be added to Nowheresville radio.

“Sounds From Nowheresville” is out on Monday 27th February.

The moments captured on this record are a benchmark for what I want to achieve before I die.

This is the most potent and spellbinding piece of music I have ever heard. Sometimes I feel like I heard it before I was even conceived.

St Vincent - Cheerleader
I recently discovered St VIncent. She is someone I really would love to see live this year - and that’s such a nice, refreshing feeling.

Einstürzende Neubauten - The Garden
The never-ending unfolding of the strings in this song haunts me for days after I hear it. There is a scene, a hallucination which accompanies the music which I can’t ever quite shake off. It’s like a beautiful reoccurring dream.

John Barry - Follow Me
My organ player introduced me to this and recommended I give it at least two listens. I did, and became intoxicated by the sublime, sumptuous strings. I listened to it everyday, twice a day from Jan - April last year.

The Beach Boys - Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)
I play an even slower-mo version of this to myself sometimes - it’s such a comforting melody.

Kurt Wagner and Courtney Tidwell - Incredibly Lonely
I discovered these when I played at a festival with them in Bergen, I melted.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Love Letter
This whole album is like catnip to the romantic in me.

Gene Krupa - Drum Boggie
Primal Joy

Etta James - I’d Rather Go Blind
Repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat….

Jack Nitzsche – The Last Race
This song makes me feel like a baddie.

Bjork - Joga
I love the combination of lush orchestration and big cold beats - but primarily it’s the epic chord changes that undo me every time.

PJ Harvey - Angelene
This reminds me of getting up early in the morning to go swimming -I can still smell the chlorine when i hear it and recall that particular fear which only small town swimming pools can evoke. (Have they banned school swimming lessons form the curriculum yet?? - they should).

NIKI & THE DOVE: MUSIC THAT INSPIRES US

Hotly-tipped Swedish duo Niki & The Dove create ethereal, synth-spiked intelligent pop with a distinctly Scandinavian and sometimes otherworldly flavour that has been championed by the likes of Annie Mac and brought them fifth place in the BBC Sound of 2012 poll.

Niki & The Dove comprises Malin Dahlström and Gustaf Karlöf, who formed the band in February 2010, choosing a name rumoured to be inspired by Prince songs.

We asked the pair to create their own WE7.com radio station for your listening pleasure, which gives an insight into what has inspired their own sound. As a consequence, their choice of songs, which include those from Roberta Flack and Blue Oyster Cult, represent quite a journey.

Last year Niki & The Dove released two EPs, The Fox and The Drummer, full of electro pop that is vital, and full of emotion, and heightening expectations for their debut album which is due for release on 14th May.

The single “DJ, Ease My Mind” is out on 26th February.

We’ve listed the winners from this year’s BRIT Awards show, which included performances by Bruno Mars, Florence & The Machine, Noel Gallagher, Olly Murs, Rihanna and Coldplay.

The biggest winners were Ed Sheeran and Adele also performed. They walked away with two statuettes each, including the British Solo Artists of the year.

The night’s only controversy came by way of presenter James Corden who curtailed Adele’s acceptance speech for British Album of the Year to make way for Blur’s performance. Following the incident, which instantly became #adelegate on Twitter, the show’s organisers apologised to Adele.

BAD BEHAVIOUR AT THE BRITS

What do you get when you combine lots of musicians, lots of attitude, big egos and free booze…? The answer is of course bad behaviour! So here’s our quick guide on what to avoid.

Yes, the ingredients of a typical music awards show can be a heady cocktail indeed, and sometimes you get people doing things their mums, their agents (and they, the next day) regret. Our selection of videos are infamous examples of how not to behave should you ever have to take to the stage yourself.

In the video above we have a rather inebriated and confused Brandon Block over whom Ronnie Wood throws his water. Take it easy and listen carefully to the announcements so that you don’t think you’ve won something you haven’t.

The Brandon Block incident took place back in 2000. Also in that year, Robbie Williams challenged Liam Gallagher to a fight (below). It probably seemed like a good idea at the time…

Throwing your weight around can be crass, but throwing objects can be down right dangerous. A decade on, Liam Gallagher suggested that we “live forever” immediately prior to potentially bringing about demise of an onlooker by hurling his BRIT Award statuette into the audience. This video also features the special skill of hurling quick insults, courtesy of Mr Peter Kay.

Another useful tip is to have a good hanky with you… just to avoid the likes of Adele’s little mishap during her recent Grammy acceptance speech. Eugh!

The final rule we would suggest is: don’t embarrass your audience. In 2012 Mariah Carey gave a bizarre acceptance at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Let’s see what the stars at tonight’s BRIT Awards have in store for us. Let’s hope they’ve read this - or that their mums aren’t going to be watching.

THE BRITS: THE BEST AND WORST?

One of the pinnacle performances of the BRIT Awards’ 35-year history has to be Adele in 2011.

Yes, we’ve all seen it before (this clip has been viewed a staggering 96 million times!), but in the run-up to tonight’s 2012 Awards perhaps it’s worth another viewing. After all, Adele is nominated in three categories including Best British Female Solo Artist - and this is the singer-songwriter at her very best.

In stark contrast, opinions are divided here as to whether KLF’s performance at the 1992 BRIT Awards with crust punk / grindcore friends Extreme Noise Terror is the loudest. It certainly must rank as one of the most extreme. Certainly firing machine guns (the bullet were blanks) into the audience is something we’re not likely to see again.

INTERVIEW: PAUL OAKENFOLD

DJ Paul Oakenfold has been performing for over 3 decades, helping to elevate and shape electronic music and remains one of the leading forces in the global music scene today.

Throughout his career Paul has set up his own record label, Perfecto Records, produced records for the likes of Madonna, and worked on music for film, TV and games.

With his latest mix compilation “Winter” out on 17th February, we caught up with Paul to talk about his career and what the rest of 2012 holds…

Hi Paul, how are you? Has 2012 got off to a good start for you?

Yeah – really good thanks, I’ve just been gearing up for my Four Seasons tour.

Can you tell us about how you started out in music?

I started off in various plugging and A&R roles before moving into DJing and setting up my own label.

You’ve been DJing and involved in many different aspects of the music scene for a while now, how do you think it’s changed since you started out?

Well there are hundreds of different changes but I guess the most significant has been the internet. The advent of the internet has brought about some good things and some bad. Music piracy on the scale we see today is obviously bad but the linking up of loads of musicians and producers internationally so they can communicate and share ideas and projects in real time has brought about a wave of exciting music.

You’re very much still on the road and continue to tour and play around the world, how do you keep motivated and is your passion for DJing still the same?

I’m very passionate about it. The music, the fans and the team around me keep the energy levels pumping!

You’ve had a residency in Las Vegas for 3 years now, how does it differ to playing in places like Ibiza?

The difference is becoming less obvious than it was a few years back when I was pretty much the only international dj to have a residency in Vegas. Back then dance music hadn’t quite exploded in the city – but 2011 saw that change and now pretty much everyone has a residency there.

A lot of people know you for your big productions like “Not Over Yet” and your work with artists like Madonna, but you also do a lot of work on music for film, TV and games - how do you find time and do you have certain preferences when deciding which projects to work on?

I love being in the studio working on music. It’s where I feel most at home when I’m not at a club or festival behind the decks. Fitting it all in is a mix of strict scheduling of time and long hours of hard work.

You set up Perfecto Records back in the late 80s which is still going strong today, what part do you play in the running of the label?

Day to day running of the label and the A&R is now being run by John Askew and James Hannan in the UK Perfecto office. The label is also a kind of partnership with Armada in the Netherlands so we have their talented team of staff involved as well. In terms of my involvement – we all talk on the phone maybe 2 or 3 times per week to make sure we are all in agreement on major decisions.

What have you got planned for the rest of 2012?

Well I have my artist album coming out called Pop Killer which features a bunch of cutting edge pop artist collaborations fused with tough electronic beats and this weekend sees the launch of my Four Seasons tour and album concept which will take me all over the world with a killer visual show and 4 mix compilation releases – starting with “Winter” which will be out on Feb 17^th. And then I will also be touring the We Are Planet Perfecto concept in the US through most of the year – till the Pop Killer tour takes over anyway and I’ll do a double CD WAPP compilation in September or October. And then there will be a bunch of singles and remixes from me on Perfecto as well – so the diary is already rammed – but all with good things – so I’m excited.

INTERVIEW: THE OVERTONES

British-Irish doo-wop five-piece The Overtones formed back in 2010, and have since signed to Rhino Records. They re-released their debut album “Good Ol’ Fashioned Love” last year, and spent time playing as the house band on Dancing On Ice and Britain’s Got Talent as well as heading out on their first headline tour.

With the band all set to release their new single “Say What I Feel”, we caught up with The Overtones to find out more about the music and what’s in stor for 2012…

Can you tell us a bit about how you all started out in music and became The Overtones?

Four of us met on the scene in London around the acoustic and open mic circuit and decided to have a shot as a group as we all had similar musical inspirations and styles. About 2 and a half years ago Timmy met Lachie whilst they were working a promo job in a department store with and then he joined the group, providing the bass.

What are your influences, and do you all bring different musical references to the band?

We’re inspired by a whole range of artists and each of us has different tastes, but what binds us is that we all have a real love of vocal harmony. So, the sound that comes out when we sing together is a mix of contemporary and classic.

Can you describe your sound and what makes you different to other bands/boy bands?

We call it vintage pop! We all take inspiration from the classic vocal groups like The Drifters or The Temptations, but it’s 2011 and we are modern day vocalists with a contemporary sound. We really love the way this sound has found it’s way back in to the UK’s musical mainframe: Adele, Amy Winehouse, Plan B, Michael Bublé all have that classic sound and the listeners are craving it I think.

Your album is a mix of covers and your own material, what do you prefer when performing?

We enjoy performing full stop! Whether we are singing our own songs, a classic cover, or a line from the phonebook, to see people get up and dance, smile and laugh when we are performing is an amazing feeling. There is a special feeling that happens when you see fans singing your own lyrics back to you. Sometimes Timmy doesn’t need to sing the first verse of ‘Gambling Man’ because the fans are singing it for him at full pelt!

You started your national tour this year in October, how did it go?

It was amazing. Performing to capacity crowds every night and seeing everyone up on their feet was an awesome feeling!

What are your ambitions for The Overtones?

Id love for us to have a career like the legend acts and still be touring in 10-20 years time. For now it’s about as many people seeing us and hearing us as possible over the world!

What are your plans for 2012?

We are taking our album “Good Ol’ Fashioned Love” to quite a few different countries which is exciting. We are also writing and recording our 2nd album and have another tour at the end of the year. Not that busy then.

Can we expect a second album any time soon?

Firstly we want to make our 2nd album as good as possible and make sure the process isn’t rushed. We will be putting a lot of love and care into it and hopefully it will be ready to show off come the end of the yearish!

Who are you most looking forward to hearing more of in 2012?

Apart from us, I am looking forward to seeing where Adele and Jessie J go with their next albums. I’m also interested in hearing Plan B’s new material.
